An unusual sight in east-central Pennsylvania, Virginian Ry. Fairbanks-Morse Trainmaster #59 on lease to the Carbondale Coal Company grumbles southbound out of North Creek PA in the mid 50's. Moments later CCC bobber caboose #409 brings up the rear of CCC train #31-S as it glides quietly past downtown North Creek behind a mixed bag of road-weary CCC twin hoppers and a VGN hopper freshly delivered from the Greenville Steel Car Company. Train 31-S is the thrice-weekly cut of hoppers plucked off the Erie interchange at Lanesboro PA for delivery to CCC and other mines in the Carbondale coal field. The two CCC Shays are showing their age, coal traffic is up, so it's VGN Trainmasters to the rescue. -- Larry Smith
